FAQs

What is LEDS?

LEDS stands for Local Electricity Discount Scheme. It is a new initiative from renewable energy company RES, which seeks to deliver direct and tangible benefits to people living and working closest to our wind farms, in the form of a discount to their electricity bills.

I'm looking information about Energia's Long Mountain Wind Farm Proximity Fund?

Energia has appointed RES to administer the Long Mountain Wind Farm Proximity Fund and you can use this website to apply online using your Unique Reference Code. If you have any questions about making an application please telephone us free from a landline on 0800 011 3341 or e-mail us at leds@res-group.com. If you have any questions about Long Mountain or Glenbuck Wind Farm in general, please contact Michael Ringland on 028 9038 0613 or michael.ringland@energia.ie

How can I check if I can get the discount?

RES contacts qualifying properties for each wind farm directly offering the opportunity to register interest in joining the discount scheme. If you are unsure as to whether you qualify you can:

Once the wind farm has been approved and construction is underway we will send you formal notification of the discount scheme and details of how you can join it.

Why is my property not eligible?

The qualifying area for LEDS is calculated by taking a straight line distance (the set distance) from each wind turbine and identifying all the properties located within this Set Distance.

The set distance is calculated so that the number of properties that fall within it will receive a discount of £200 per year*. The set distance will vary from wind farm to wind farm - reflecting each project's location and size.

I fall within a LEDS Qualifying Area but I have not received any information from RES - what should I do to join the discount scheme?

If you have not received a letter and LEDS leaflet from RES but think that you qualify for LEDS please contact us on 0800 011 3341, or e-mail leds@res-group.com, with your address details and we will be able to confirm if you qualify for a LEDS discount.

How is the level of payment calculated?

Under the LEDS initiative those residential, community and business properties closest to a new RES wind farm are eligible for a discount off their electricity bills. A minimum £100 discount was offered up to November 2014 with projects submitted into planning after this offering a fixed discount of £200.

What do I have to do to claim a payment?

RES will contact qualifying properties directly to let them know about the discount scheme. If you are interested in joining the scheme you will need to register your interest, which you can do:

The discount can only be implemented if the wind farm is approved and constructed. Once construction is underway we will send you formal notification of the scheme and you will need to fill out an application form. Once this is done you can sit back, relax and start to receive the discount when the wind farm enters commercial operation.

How much will the annual payment be?

The number of properties qualifying for each LEDS scheme will vary from site to site - reflecting each wind farm's location, as well as taking into account its size. A minimum £100 discount was offered up to November 2014 with projects submitted into planning after this offering a fixed discount of £200.

To find out about the discount that you may be able to receive you can:

How will the payment be made?

The discount will be paid directly to your electricity supplier and will be deducted from your bill. Special arrangements will be made for properties using pre-payment meters which we will advise you on when the LEDS discount commences.

How long will I receive the discount for?

The discount will be paid for the full life-time of the wind farm, or for as long as you live in a qualifying property.

What happens if I move?

The discount applies to the property you live or work in, and so if you move out of a qualifying property you will no longer be able to receive the discount. In this situation you would need to let us know so that we can remove you from the scheme. If you move into a new property that qualifies for the discount you would simply need to apply to rejoin the scheme.

Is LEDS being offered instead of other community benefits?

No. LEDS is being offered as an additional benefit to RES' Community Benefit Funds, which offer a significant financial contribution to local communities for the life-time of the wind farm that is used to support local initiatives and organisations.

Is LEDS available for all RES wind farms?

RES piloted its first LEDS scheme in the summer of 2012. Following the success of this launch RES committed to implementing LEDS at all new onshore wind projects across the UK (of 5MW or more) submitted into the planning system from the start of 2013.

In 2014 RES made the first discount payments at two of its recently completed wind farms: Meikle Carewe Wind Farm in Aberdeenshire; and Tallentire Wind Farm in Cumbria. RES is now implementing LEDS at all its consented wind farms as well as those under construction.

What happens to my details once I am registered?

Once you have registered your interest in the electricity discount scheme we will write to you to confirm that we have received your details. We will then keep you informed about the progress of the wind farm proposal through the planning and construction stages. Once the wind farm is under construction we will send you formal notification of the scheme and ask you to complete an application form.

Does LEDS tie me to using one electricity supplier?

No. LEDS is not linked to any particular supplier or tariff, you simply have to let RES know who you buy your electricity from. If you change your supplier at any point you must remember to inform the scheme administrator, so that when it comes round to the time of the payment, they can ensure they pay your new electricity provider.

I pay my electricity via a pre-payment card, can I still receive the discount?

Yes. Special arrangements will be made for properties using pre-payment meters which we will advise you on when the LEDS discount commences.

What happens to a property that is within the LEDS catchment area but not on mains electricity?

Unfortunately, properties that are not on mains electricity do not qualify to join the scheme.
